Freezer buying comes down to three practical decisions: how much capacity you actually need, whether you want frost-free or are happy to defrost manually, and — a question that matters more in this area than most — where the appliance is going to live. That last point is worth dwelling on. A great many households across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire keep a second freezer in a garage, outbuilding or unheated utility, and standard N-class appliances simply don't work reliably below 16°C ambient. We stock garage-rated and SN-class models specifically for this, and we will always ask where the freezer is going before recommending anything. Delivery and installation are handled by our own engineers: we position and level the appliance, reverse the door if you need it hinged the other way, advise on the settling time before switching on, set the thermostat and verify the running temperature with a calibrated thermometer. Before you buy: is repairing cheaper?
Freezers are usually worth repairing, partly because the common faults are inexpensive and partly because the appliance's contents are often worth more than the repair. An upright freezer costs £250–£550 new and a chest freezer £200–£450, putting the 50% threshold at roughly £125–£275 — comfortably above a £90 call-out plus the sort of part these faults need. Start relays, thermostats, evaporator fans, door seals and defrost circuit components are all sound repairs on an appliance up to twelve years old. Typical lifespan is 12 to 16 years for an upright and often longer for a chest freezer, with Liebherr and similar premium models regularly passing 20. The clear replace decision is a sealed-system failure — a seized compressor or a refrigerant leak — where the cost of properly locating and repairing the leak exceeds the appliance's value, and where a simple top-up is neither lawful nor durable. One judgement worth making separately: if your appliance is an N-class freezer failing every winter in a garage, that's a specification problem no repair will solve, and the right answer is a garage-rated replacement. Environmentally, a freezer's continuous running means in-use energy matters, but a well-sealed serviced older freezer is close enough to modern efficiency that repair remains the better choice. How to choose the right freezer
Upright versus chest
Chest freezers give roughly 20 percent more usable capacity per pound and per watt, hold temperature far longer in a power cut, and last longer — but you have to dig for things and they take a large floor footprint. Uprights are far easier to organise with drawers and suit kitchens and utility rooms. For a garage bulk store, chest wins on almost every measure.
Frost-free or static
Frost-free eliminates manual defrosting and keeps drawers usable, but costs more, uses slightly more electricity, and adds a defrost heater and control circuit that can fail. Static freezers are cheaper, quieter and simpler, at the cost of defrosting once or twice a year. For a garage bulk freezer opened rarely, static is often the better buy.
Check the climate class for the location
This is the single most important spec if the freezer isn't going in a heated room. N class covers 16–32°C, SN covers 10–32°C, and garage-rated models work down to around 0°C or below. Fitting an N-class freezer in a Cambridgeshire garage will cost you a freezer full of food one January.
Capacity and the star rating
Allow roughly 60 litres per person for everyday use, more if you batch cook or buy in bulk. Check for the four-star rating, which confirms the appliance can freeze fresh food down as well as store already-frozen items — a three-star appliance can only store. The freezing capacity figure in kg per 24 hours matters if you freeze large batches.
Energy rating over a long life
A freezer runs continuously for 12 to 16 years, so the energy label is a significant lifetime cost. Under the 2021 scale, D or E is typical, C is good and B is excellent. The gap between an F and a C rated freezer over fifteen years is often £300–£500 in electricity, which frequently exceeds the price difference.
Fast freeze and temperature alarms
A fast-freeze function drops the cabinet temperature ahead of a large load so it freezes quickly and doesn't warm the existing contents — genuinely useful for batch cooking. A door-open and temperature alarm is worth having on any freezer holding significant value, particularly one in a garage you don't visit daily.
Power-off autonomy figure
Manufacturers publish a rise-time or autonomy figure in hours: how long the contents stay below −9°C with the power off. Anything above 20 hours is good and above 30 is excellent. It matters more than people think, given that rural parts of Cambridgeshire still see occasional extended winter outages.
Integrated column freezers
Integrated freezers fit a standard tall housing behind a decor door and suit fitted kitchens where appearance matters. They cost more, give less internal capacity for the footprint, and depend absolutely on the housing having correct ventilation. If the freezer is your bulk store, a freestanding or chest model elsewhere in the house is usually more practical.
Do you deliver, install and take the old freezer away?
Yes, all three. We position and level the appliance, reverse the door hinges if needed, set the thermostat and verify the running temperature before we leave. The old freezer goes for specialist WEEE recycling, which for refrigeration means proper recovery of the refrigerant and insulation gases, at no extra cost.
Which freezers are suitable for a garage?
You need an SN climate class as a minimum, and ideally a specifically garage-rated model designed for low ambient temperatures. A standard N-class appliance is rated only from 16°C and will let food thaw in a cold garage in winter. We always ask where the freezer is going before recommending a model.
How long before I can switch a new freezer on?
Four hours if it has been transported upright, and at least 12 hours if it has travelled on its side, so the compressor oil can drain back out of the refrigerant lines. We advise on this at delivery. Then allow another four to six hours to reach temperature before loading it with food.
Should I choose frost-free or a manual defrost freezer?
Frost-free if it's your main kitchen freezer and gets opened several times a day — it keeps drawers usable and saves an annual chore. Manual defrost if it's a bulk store in a garage that's opened rarely, since it's cheaper, simpler and has no defrost circuit to fail. Both are good appliances for their respective jobs.
How quickly can you deliver?
