Buying an oven is more constrained than buying a freestanding appliance because it has to fit an existing aperture and an existing electrical supply, so we always check both before recommending anything — a standard single oven housing is 595mm wide by 595mm high, but doubles, compacts and older non-standard housings vary considerably. Our engineers do the installation themselves. That means checking the cooker circuit and isolator are rated correctly for the appliance, withdrawing the old oven, making off the connection properly, confirming the housing has the ventilation gaps the manufacturer specifies, levelling and securing the new oven, and running it up to temperature on test before we leave. Restricted ventilation in a housing is one of the most common reasons a new oven's control board dies early, so we check it as standard rather than as an extra. Your old oven is taken away for WEEE recycling. We also supply ovens, fully tested and carrying our own 6-month parts and labour guarantee.

Before you buy: is repairing cheaper?
Built-in ovens are the strongest repair case in the whole kitchen. A replacement single oven costs £350–£800 for the appliance alone, and swapping one out means matching the aperture, checking the cable rating at the cooker point, and sometimes modifying the housing — so the true replacement cost is often £500–£1,000. Applied against the 50% rule, that leaves a great deal of headroom for a £90 call-out plus a part. Typical lifespan is 10 to 15 years and premium models regularly exceed 20, because an oven has far fewer moving parts than a washing machine or dishwasher. Elements, thermostats, hinges, seals and lamps are consumable items designed to be replaced during the appliance's life, not evidence it has reached the end of it. The clear replace decisions are a failed control board on a budget oven over twelve years old where the part alone approaches half the replacement price, or a cavity with structural corrosion or split enamel. Environmentally, an oven's manufacturing footprint is substantial — a lot of steel, glass and insulation for one appliance — so extending its life by fitting a new element is far better than scrapping it. If we do recommend replacement, we can supply and fit the new oven and take the old one away.

How to choose the right oven
Measure the aperture, not the old oven
A standard single oven aperture is 595mm wide, 595mm high and 550–560mm deep; a double is 595mm wide and 888–893mm high. Older kitchens and some European units vary. Measure the opening itself and the depth available behind, including where the cable emerges, before choosing anything.
Single, double or one-and-a-half
A double oven gives you a separate grill and second cavity, which matters at Christmas and for families cooking multiple dishes. A single oven gives one large cavity, typically 65–72 litres, which suits bulky roasts better. A 'one and a half' double has a smaller top cavity that doubles as a grill and is the practical compromise for most households.
Pyrolytic, catalytic or manual cleaning
Pyrolytic ovens heat to around 480°C and reduce residue to ash you wipe out — genuinely effective, but they need a well-ventilated housing and use around 3–4 kWh per clean. Catalytic liners absorb grease at normal cooking temperatures but need replacing eventually. Manual enamel is cheapest and, with modern easy-clean coatings, perfectly workable.
Check your electrical supply
Most single ovens draw 2.5–3.5kW and can run from a dedicated cooker circuit or, on some models, a 13A supply — but never assume. A pyrolytic oven or a large double will need a proper cooker circuit and isolator. We check the existing supply and its rating before ordering, because discovering it mid-installation is nobody's idea of a good day.
Steam and combination functions
Full steam ovens and steam-assisted models genuinely improve bread, fish and vegetables, and combination microwave-ovens are excellent in a compact housing as a second oven. Consider whether you'll refill a water tank regularly — that's usually what decides whether the function gets used or ignored after three months.
Cavity capacity and shelf count
Look at the usable litres rather than the external size — modern ovens range from around 60 to 77 litres in the same 595mm aperture depending on cavity design. Check how many shelf positions there are and whether telescopic runners are included or available, because they make a real difference with heavy roasting tins.
Door type and kitchen layout
Standard drop-down doors need clearance in front, which is tight in a galley kitchen. Side-opening doors, available on some compact and combination models, work far better in narrow spaces and for eye-level installations. Check which side the hinge is on if you go that route.
Cooling and housing ventilation
Ovens need the manufacturer's stated ventilation gaps in the housing — usually a gap at the plinth and behind, plus a clear route for the cooling fan discharge. Boxing an oven in tightly is the single most common cause of premature control board failure. We verify this at installation rather than assuming the kitchen fitter got it right.
Do you install the new oven and take the old one away?
Yes, both are included. We withdraw the old oven, check the cooker circuit and isolator rating, connect and secure the new appliance, confirm the housing ventilation is correct and test it up to temperature. The old oven goes for WEEE recycling at no extra charge.
Will a new oven fit my existing kitchen housing?
Usually, since 595mm apertures are a long-standing standard, but we always measure before ordering. Older kitchens, some imported units and certain double oven housings deviate. If a housing needs modifying we'll tell you before you commit rather than on the day.
Can you fit an oven if the electrical supply needs changing?
We check the existing cooker circuit and isolator as part of every installation and will tell you if the appliance you want needs a heavier supply. Where new circuit work is required we'll advise on what's needed so it can be arranged by a qualified electrician before the fit.
How quickly can you deliver and install?
Stocked models are usually fitted within two to four working days across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, with a timed slot. Built-in installations are booked with a slightly longer window than freestanding appliances because withdrawal and refitting take time.
Is a pyrolytic oven worth the extra money?
If you roast frequently and dislike cleaning, yes — it genuinely works, reducing residue to ash you wipe away. Bear in mind it needs a well-ventilated housing, uses around 3–4 kWh per clean, and runs the appliance to about 480°C, which is a real thermal stress. For light cooks, an easy-clean enamel oven is plenty.
