Direct-drive washing machines are well worth repairing — the expensive part, the motor, almost never fails, and the rest is standard hardware. Large fridge freezers are worth fixing for defrost, fan and control faults, but a sealed-system or compressor failure past eight years usually is not.

LG pioneered the direct-drive washing machine, and it remains the brand's strongest argument. With the drum bolted straight to the rotor there is no belt to slip and no brushes to wear, and the ten-year motor warranty is not marketing bluster — motor failures are genuinely rare. The trade-off is that when things do go wrong, they tend to be electronic rather than mechanical, and diagnosis matters more than brute force.
The faults we see repeatedly are OE drain errors, IE fill errors from silted inlet filters in our hard water, and door lock failures. On the larger fridge freezers, linear compressor and inverter board issues have been a known weak point on some generations, and it is worth being honest that a sealed-system fault on a big American-style unit is often the end of the appliance. Parts for current models are well supplied, and LG's own service network covers the East of England; for out-of-warranty work we source through the independent channel with next-day availability on the common items. Direct-drive laundry generally repays repair; large refrigeration needs a case-by-case judgement.

What goes wrong with LG appliances
OE drain error on washing machines
The machine cannot drain within the allotted time and stops. Blocked pump filters account for most of these, along with a drain hose that has been pushed too deep into the standpipe. A persistent OE with a clean filter usually means a failed pump or a blocked pressure sensor hose.
IE water inlet error in hard water areas
The inlet valve filters clog with limescale and grit, so the machine fills too slowly and times out. Cambridgeshire water makes this a routine call. Cleaning the mesh filters in the inlet hoses fixes many cases; where the valve solenoid itself has failed the valve block is replaced.
dE door lock errors
The machine reports the door is not locked and refuses to start, or locks and will not release. Worn door hooks, a sagging hinge or a failed interlock are the usual causes. It is not a fault to force — the hook breaks and takes the door frame with it.
Linear compressor and inverter faults on fridge freezers
Some LG linear compressor generations have a recognised failure pattern where the unit runs but does not cool, sometimes with the inverter board at fault rather than the compressor. Diagnosis needs proper refrigeration testing; a compressor replacement on an older large-format fridge is rarely economic.
Evaporator icing and ER FF fan errors
Ice forms around the evaporator fan behind the rear panel, the fan stalls, and the appliance reports a fan fault while the fridge slowly warms. The underlying cause is normally a defrost heater or sensor failure, or a blocked defrost drain, all of which are properly repairable.
Suspension and damper wear causing violent spin
Direct-drive machines are heavy, and once the shock absorbers weaken the drum walks on high-speed spins and the machine repeatedly aborts with an unbalance error. Dampers are inexpensive and should be changed in pairs.
