Zanussi is Electrolux's volume brand and shares its electronics, fault codes and much of its hardware with AEG — an E10 or E20 on a Zanussi means exactly what it means on an AEG. The difference is in the specification: thinner cabinet steel, simpler suspension, plastic rather than metal detail, and a shorter list of features. That is not a criticism so much as a description of the price point; a Zanussi is built to do a competent job for a decade rather than to feel special.
In practice they are honest machines to work on. The layout is conventional, the pumps and heaters are accessible, and the parts are cheap. What we see most is drain faults, heater failures in the hard water we have across Cambridgeshire, and door interlocks. The economics are the thing to watch: on a machine that cost £320 new, a call-out plus an expensive part at year nine is a poor deal, while the same job at year four is obviously sensible. We will always tell you which side of that line you are on rather than just quoting the job.
Parts and availability
Parts are shared with Electrolux and AEG, so they are widely stocked and cheap — pumps and interlocks are commonly £20–£40, elements £25–£45. Lead times are next day for consumables and two to four days for boards and drum parts.

What goes wrong with Zanussi appliances
E20 drain fault
Water is left in the drum and the cycle aborts. The pump filter is the first suspect, but on Zanussi the pressure chamber and its hose silt up with detergent scum and produce the same code with a perfectly clear filter. Both need checking before condemning the pump.
Heating element failure and scaling in hard water
Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire water is very hard, and Zanussi elements scale heavily if the machine is only ever run at 30 degrees. The machine washes cold, cycles take longer, and eventually the element goes open circuit or trips the RCD. Elements are inexpensive and quick to change.
E40 door lock and interlock faults
The machine reports the door open when it is shut, or refuses to release at the end of the cycle. The interlock itself fails most often, but a sagging hinge or a worn door hook that no longer engages squarely gives the same symptom and is worth ruling out first.
Drum bearing failure at seven to ten years
A rumbling that grows to a roar on spin, sometimes with rust-coloured water on the door glass. On many Zanussi models the bearings are replaceable in a split tub, which keeps the job economic; on the newer sealed-tub models it is not, and that usually ends the machine.
Carbon brush wear on brush-motor models
Older belt-driven Zanussi machines fill, drain and heat but will not turn the drum once the brushes wear down. It is one of the cheapest repairs in the trade, but only worth doing if the commutator has not been scored.
