Whirlpool in the UK means two rather different things. The European-built laundry and dishwashers share their platform, fault codes and parts with Hotpoint and Indesit, which since 2024 sit under Beko Europe. The American-style fridge freezers and some microwaves are a separate lineage with their own components. Knowing which you have matters, because the repair economics are not the same.
The European machines are simple, cheap to fix and well supported: F05 for drainage, F06 for door locks, F08 for heating, all with inexpensive and readily available parts. They are competent rather than exciting. The American refrigeration is generally robust but expensive to repair once you get past fans, thermostats and defrost components, and a sealed-system failure is usually terminal. Overall Whirlpool is a middle-of-the-road brand that repairs well when the fault is a standard component and poorly when it is a compressor or a discontinued board. Our advice tends to be repair the laundry, and think carefully about a large fridge freezer over eight years old.
Parts and availability

What goes wrong with Whirlpool appliances
F05 drain fault on washing machines
The machine will not empty or cannot confirm an empty drum, so it stops with the door locked and water inside. The pump filter is the first thing to check, followed by the waste hose and the pump itself. It is the single most common Whirlpool laundry call we take.
F06 door lock faults
The interlock fails to confirm the door is locked and the machine refuses to start or to release at the end of a cycle. Interlocks are a genuine wear item on this platform, and a dropped hinge or worn hook often shortens the life of the replacement if it is not corrected.
F08 heater circuit faults
This flags a heating problem — commonly a scaled or failed element, a stuck heater relay on the board, or a pressure switch stuck in the full position. In hard water the element is the usual culprit and is a low-cost repair.
F03 temperature sensor faults
The NTC thermistor reads incorrectly or goes open circuit, so the machine either refuses to heat or aborts the wash phase. The sensor is inexpensive; the job is verifying that the board is reading it correctly rather than simply swapping parts.
Ice build-up and fan noise on American fridge freezers
A failed defrost heater or sensor lets ice form around the evaporator, the fan strikes it, and the fridge slowly warms while the freezer stays cold. Repairable, and much cheaper than the sealed-system faults owners often assume they are facing.
Discontinued electronics on older models
Whirlpool's UK model range has changed hands and changed rapidly, and control boards for some older machines are no longer produced. We confirm the part exists before booking the repair rather than after the call-out.
