Built-in hobs have changed more in the last fifteen years than any other kitchen appliance, and the fault profile has changed with them. A radiant ceramic hob is a simple thing: elements under glass, switched by energy regulators or touch modules. An induction hob is a piece of power electronics — each zone has a copper coil driven by an IGBT inverter at around 20–50kHz, generating an oscillating magnetic field that induces eddy currents directly in the base of a ferrous pan. Nothing under the glass gets hot except by conduction back from the pan. That difference matters for diagnosis. When an induction zone dies, the cause is usually the power module — an IGBT, its driver, or the cooling fan that keeps the module below its thermal limit — not the coil itself. Induction hobs are also intolerant of poor ventilation. They need the manufacturer's stated air gap beneath, and fitting one over a drawer unit without the correct clearance is the most common installation error we correct in new kitchens. Ceramic and solid-plate hobs fail more conventionally: radiant elements go open circuit, energy regulators burn out, and touch control modules die from heat or moisture ingress under the glass. Gas hobs fail at the ignition and flame supervision end — blocked ports, carboned electrodes, and thermocouples that no longer hold the gas valve open. All gas work is carried out only by a Gas Safe registered engineer; we will never touch a gas connection outside that. Across all three types, the most common single fault we attend is unresponsive touch controls, and a good proportion of those are not faults at all but a child lock engaged, a spillage bridging the sensors, or a residual heat lockout. Hobs divide sharply by type when it comes to the repair decision. Gas and radiant ceramic hobs repair very well: elements, regulators, electrodes and thermocouples are cheap parts, so a £90 call-out plus one of them against a £250–£450 replacement clears the 50% rule comfortably. Induction is tighter, because the power modules are substantial electronic assemblies and much the most expensive part on the hob, against a replacement at £350–£700 plus fitting. A module repair on a hob under five years old is usually sound; on an eight-year-old budget induction hob it often isn't. Typical lifespans are 12–15 years for gas, 10–14 for ceramic and 8–12 for induction. In practice, though, cracked glass ends more hobs than component failure does, and on cheaper models the replacement panel genuinely can cost more than a new appliance. One thing worth weighing before replacing: swapping a hob means checking the worktop cut-out dimensions and the electrical supply, since induction typically needs a 32A cooker circuit rather than the 13A a gas hob's ignition ran from. Environmentally, a hob is a dense assembly of glass, steel and copper whose manufacture far exceeds its running impact, so repairing where the numbers allow is clearly the better choice. Water across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire runs around 280–320 mg/l. That limescale is the single biggest reason appliances die early here.
Sugar, jam, syrup and fizzy drinks chemically etch hot ceramic glass and permanently weaken it, and etched patches are where cracks later start. Use a proper ceramic hob scraper at a shallow angle while the zone is still warm, not hot and not cold. This is the single most valuable habit for hob longevity.
Induction hobs need the manufacturer's stated air gap — usually a minimum clearance to the drawer or oven below plus a ventilated void. A drawer stuffed with tea towels directly underneath will cause thermal shutdowns and eventually kill a power module. Check it periodically, not just at installation.
For induction, test pans with a magnet — if it doesn't stick firmly, the zone won't run. Match pan diameter to the zone within about 10mm, since an undersized pan wastes energy and can fail pan detection. A warped base reduces efficiency on any hob type and causes buzzing on induction.
Scouring pads and abrasive creams leave micro-scratches that dull the surface and give food something to key into. Use a dedicated ceramic hob cream and a soft cloth, plus a scraper for baked-on residue. Bleach and caustic oven cleaner will attack the printed zone markings and the edge sealant.
Lift them off once cool, brush the flame ports clear with a soft brush — never a needle, which enlarges the ports — and dry thoroughly before reseating. Make sure each cap goes back on its matching crown; mixing them up between burners is a common cause of poor flame picture.
Water films, wet cloths and spillages across the sensor area will lock the controls or make them respond randomly, and prolonged moisture eventually reaches the module underneath. Wipe the control area dry as a matter of routine and never leave a damp tea towel across it.
Lift pans rather than dragging them, particularly cast iron and stoneware, which scratch ceramic surfaces and can chip the edges. Grit trapped under a pan base acts like sandpaper. Scratches are cosmetic at first but create stress points in what is a structural glass panel.
Induction transfers energy directly into the pan base with nothing to absorb it, so an empty pan reaches extreme temperatures within a minute or two and will trigger the overheat protection or damage the glass. It's also the fastest way to ruin a good pan. Always add contents before switching on.

Often yes, but the maths is tighter than for other appliances. A mid-range 60cm induction hob costs £350–£700 new plus fitting, so a £90 call-out plus a power module makes sense on a four-year-old hob and rather less on an eight-year-old budget model. We give you the part cost before you commit.
Yes, where OEM glass is still available for the model. We fit it with new seals and clips and inspect the elements, coils and wiring beneath while access is open. On some budget hobs the glass costs more than a replacement appliance and we'll tell you that straight away.
Any work on the gas side — burners, injectors, flame supervision devices, hoses and connections — is carried out only by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The electrical side, including ignition modules and spark circuits where these are separable, is standard work. Tell us the hob type when you book.
Most repairs take 45 to 110 minutes in one visit. Elements, regulators, sensors and gas burner components are usually first-visit fixes. Induction power modules and glass panels are model-specific and typically need ordering, which takes two to four working days.

A gas hob typically lasts 12 to 15 years, a radiant ceramic hob 10 to 14, and an induction hob 8 to 12 — the induction figure being limited by its power electronics rather than anything mechanical. In every case, glass damage is more often what ends a hob's life than component failure.
