Wine coolers are refrigeration appliances with a completely different brief to a fridge. Instead of driving a cabinet down to 4°C and holding it there, a wine cooler has to maintain a stable, gently controlled temperature — typically 5–10°C for whites and sparkling, 12–18°C for reds — with minimal vibration, controlled humidity, and protection from UV light. Every one of those requirements shapes the engineering, and every one of them creates its own failure modes. There are two fundamentally different technologies, and knowing which you have determines everything about the diagnosis. Thermoelectric coolers use Peltier modules — solid-state devices that pump heat from one face to the other when energised — with heatsinks and fans either side. They are silent, vibration-free and cheap, but they can only achieve a limited differential below room temperature, typically 10–15°C, which is why a thermoelectric cooler in a hot summer kitchen simply cannot reach its setpoint. That is physics, not a fault, and we explain it honestly rather than selling a repair. Compressor models use a conventional refrigeration circuit and can hold setpoint in almost any ambient, at the cost of some vibration and noise. Dual-zone cabinets add complexity: two independently controlled compartments, either with two Peltier modules, or with a single compressor and a damper or a second evaporator. Faults where one zone works and the other doesn't are among the most common calls we take. Wine coolers are a strong repair case, both because of what they cost and because of what's inside them. A decent freestanding or built-under cabinet is £400–£1,500 to replace, and a large integrated or multi-zone cabinet considerably more, so the 50% rule leaves ample room against a £90 call-out plus the part. Add the practical disruption of relocating a full cabinet of wine while a replacement is sourced and fitted, and the case is stronger still. Typical lifespan is 8 to 12 years for a thermoelectric cooler, limited by its Peltier modules and fans, and 10 to 15 for a compressor cabinet. Fans, sensors, seals, dampers, drains and lighting are all economical fixes at any point in the appliance's life. There is one honest exception worth stating clearly. If you have a thermoelectric cooler that has never reached its setpoint in a warm room, that's a specification mismatch rather than a fault, and no repair will fix it — the right answer is a compressor model, and we'll tell you so rather than take money for work that can't succeed. Environmentally, a wine cooler is a modest appliance but a long-lived one, and the manufacturing footprint of a replacement far exceeds the marginal efficiency gain. Repair is nearly always the right call.

Water across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire runs around 280–320 mg/l. That limescale is the single biggest reason appliances die early here.
Whether thermoelectric or compressor, a wine cooler sheds its heat through a rear heatsink or condenser, and dust there directly costs cooling capacity. On a thermoelectric model, which has limited headroom to begin with, a dusty heatsink is often the difference between reaching setpoint and not. Vacuum it with a brush nozzle.
Built-under and integrated wine coolers vent through the plinth, and kitchen fitters block those vents surprisingly often. Check the plinth grille is present and clear, and that the manufacturer's stated air gap exists behind. A boxed-in cooler will never hold temperature and will wear out early.
Horizontal storage keeps the wine in contact with the cork, which keeps the cork swollen and airtight. It's the single most important storage practice and it costs nothing. Screwcap wines don't need it, but there's no harm, and the racking is designed for it anyway.
Too dry and natural corks shrink and let air in; too damp and labels grow mould. A small hygrometer inside the cabinet costs a few pounds and tells you where you are. If your cooler has a humidity tray, keep it topped up; if it doesn't, a shallow dish of water in the base works.
Whites and sparkling want 5–10°C, reds 12–18°C. Running a whole cabinet at 5°C when most of it is red wine wastes energy, reduces humidity, and on a thermoelectric model may be beyond the appliance's ability in a warm room. If you store both, a dual-zone cabinet is the right tool.
Bottles are thermal mass, and a full cabinet holds a far steadier temperature than a half-empty one, which means less cycling and less wear. If you're running it lightly loaded, water-filled bottles fill the gap perfectly well and cost nothing.
Close a sheet of paper in the door at several points and pull — free withdrawal means a leak. Clean the seal with warm soapy water and dry it. On a wine cooler a seal leak also brings humid room air in, which causes the condensation on the glass that people mistake for a refrigeration fault.
Direct sunlight, a position beside an oven or dishwasher, or a conservatory will all defeat a wine cooler — especially a thermoelectric one, which can only manage 10–15°C below ambient. Both light and heat also damage wine directly. An internal wall in a stable-temperature room is ideal.

Most repairs take 45 to 110 minutes in a single visit. Built-under and integrated cabinets take longer because the appliance has to be withdrawn from its aperture and refitted with the door alignment reset. Door units and Peltier modules are model-specific and may need ordering.

If it's a thermoelectric model, possibly not, and we'll be honest about that. Peltier cooling can only achieve around 10–15°C below the room temperature, so in a warm kitchen the setpoint is physically out of reach. We'll confirm whether that's the situation or whether there's a genuine fault, and if it's the former we won't charge you for a repair that can't work.
Yes, where the OEM door or glass unit is available. Misting between the panes means the double-glazed unit's edge seal has failed and it cannot be cleaned or dried out. We fit the correct UV-filtered replacement, since ordinary glass would let light degrade the wine.
