The cabinets are heavily insulated, the compressors are quiet and long-lived, and the temperature stability in both the fridge and the BioFresh compartments is genuinely superior to mass-market appliances. The faults tend to be electronic and defrost related rather than mechanical. Failed defrost heaters and sensors let ice build up and block airflow; door seals harden after a decade and cause over-running and frost; electronic control boards and display modules occasionally fail. Compressor failures are rare, which matters because they are the one repair that is hard to justify. Parts come from Germany, are of good quality, cost more than mass-market equivalents and typically take a few days. Because a comparable replacement is expensive, particularly for integrated and wine-cabinet models, Liebherr appliances are worth repairing at ages where most brands would be replaced.

What goes wrong with Liebherr appliances
Defrost heater or sensor failure causing ice build-up
On NoFrost models a failed defrost heater, sensor or thermal fuse lets ice form on the evaporator behind the rear panel, restricting airflow so the fridge warms while the freezer stays cold. It is repairable and far cheaper than owners fear; the ice itself is a symptom, not the fault.
Door seal hardening and frost formation
After eight to twelve years the magnetic gasket loses flexibility, warm moist air is drawn in, and the cabinet frosts up and runs continuously. Energy consumption rises noticeably. Gaskets are model-specific but readily available and are a straightforward change.
Electronic control and display module faults
Control boards and display panels can fail, showing incorrect temperatures, alarm states or a blank display while the appliance carries on cooling. Diagnosis is straightforward but boards are a premium part, so we price the job before ordering.
Blocked defrost drain causing water in the cabinet
The small drain hole at the back of the fridge compartment blocks with debris, so defrost water pools in the salad drawer or runs onto the floor. It looks alarming but is one of the simplest faults to put right.
Wine cabinet temperature and humidity control faults
Wine cabinets depend on tight temperature and humidity regulation, and a failed sensor, fan or damper produces gradual drift that owners often do not notice until the wine is affected. Regular verification of the actual internal temperature is worthwhile on any cabinet over five years old.
