Repairs across Hitchin
A high share of work in period properties where appliances are squeezed into non-standard recesses, meaning replacement is often impractical and repair is the only realistic option.
Reached off the A1(M) at junction 8 then across on the A602, or on the A505 from Baldock, with town centre access constrained by the conservation area's narrow streets.
The housing in Hitchin — and what it does to appliances
The centre holds timber-framed, Georgian and early Victorian buildings around the Market Place, Sun Street and Bancroft, a high proportion listed and within a conservation area. Victorian terracing surrounds it in Walsworth and the Bearton area, and inter-war and post-war housing spreads further out towards Westmill and Oughton Head. The listed and conservation stock means a lot of kitchens are compromises fitted into rooms with awkward dimensions.
Hard water in Hitchin
Very hard — Affinity Water chalk-derived supply from the North Hertfordshire chalk, typically around 295 ppm calcium carbonate (about 21 Clark degrees). In practice that means limescale builds on every heating element in the house — the washing machine, the dishwasher, the kettle and the boiler. It's the reason element and pump failures are so much more common here than in soft-water parts of the country.
Descaling a washing machine and a dishwasher every eight to twelve weeks is the single most cost-effective thing a household in Hitchin can do for its appliances. Our hard water guide explains exactly how.
Getting to you, and getting to the machine
Hitchin's centre is medieval in plan, so Sun Street, Bancroft and the lanes behind the Market Place are narrow, one-way in places and heavily restricted for waiting. Market days fill the square and the parking around it, so it helps to tell us which day suits if you live centrally. Period houses here often open straight onto the pavement with no side gate, meaning an appliance travels through the hall, and low door heads and tight stair turns matter more than doorway width. Walsworth and Westmill are far simpler, with driveways or unrestricted kerbside space close to the door.
