The first question we ask is where the appliance will live and how warm that room gets, because that single answer determines whether a thermoelectric or a compressor model is the right choice — and getting it wrong is the most common wine cooler buying mistake. Built-under and integrated cabinets are the format we fit most, typically in a 600mm or 300mm slimline aperture. Installation is by our own engineers: verifying the aperture and, critically, the ventilation provision at the plinth, positioning and levelling the cabinet so the door self-closes and the shelves sit true, reversing or adjusting the door where the model allows, and setting the zone temperatures and verifying them with a calibrated thermometer before we leave. Blocked plinth ventilation is one of the most common reasons a built-under cooler underperforms, and it's much easier to sort at installation than afterwards. Before you buy: is repairing cheaper?
Wine coolers are a strong repair case, both because of what they cost and because of what's inside them. A decent freestanding or built-under cabinet is £400–£1,500 to replace, and a large integrated or multi-zone cabinet considerably more, so the 50% rule leaves ample room against a £90 call-out plus the part. Add the practical disruption of relocating a full cabinet of wine while a replacement is sourced and fitted, and the case is stronger still. Typical lifespan is 8 to 12 years for a thermoelectric cooler, limited by its Peltier modules and fans, and 10 to 15 for a compressor cabinet. Fans, sensors, seals, dampers, drains and lighting are all economical fixes at any point in the appliance's life. There is one honest exception worth stating clearly. If you have a thermoelectric cooler that has never reached its setpoint in a warm room, that's a specification mismatch rather than a fault, and no repair will fix it — the right answer is a compressor model, and we'll tell you so rather than take money for work that can't succeed. Environmentally, a wine cooler is a modest appliance but a long-lived one, and the manufacturing footprint of a replacement far exceeds the marginal efficiency gain. Repair is nearly always the right call.

How to choose the right wine cooler
Thermoelectric or compressor — decide on the room
Thermoelectric is silent and vibration-free but can only cool 10–15°C below ambient, so it fails in a warm kitchen. Compressor models hold setpoint regardless of the room, cool faster, and suit any location, at the cost of some noise and vibration. If the cooler is going in a normal kitchen, choose compressor.
Single or dual zone
Single zone is right if you store mostly one style, or if you're happy at a universal 12°C. Dual zone gives independently controlled compartments — typically 5–10°C above and 12–18°C below — which genuinely matters if you keep both whites and reds at serving temperature. Multi-zone cabinets extend that further at a price.
Capacity — and what the bottle count really means
Quoted bottle counts assume standard 750ml Bordeaux bottles stacked to capacity. Burgundy and Champagne bottles are fatter, so real-world capacity is often 20–30 percent lower than the headline figure. If you keep a lot of Champagne or Burgundy, size up. Also check whether shelves pull out fully, which affects daily usability.
Built-under ventilation is non-negotiable
A built-under or integrated wine cooler vents through the plinth, and needs the manufacturer's stated grille area and air path. A freestanding model must never be built in, because it vents at the rear and will overheat. Check the appliance is specifically rated for built-in installation before ordering.
UV protection and door glazing
Light degrades wine, so look for a smoked, tinted or UV-filtered double-glazed door. Double glazing also improves thermal performance and reduces condensation on the outside in humid weather. Solid doors give the best protection of all if you don't need to see the bottles.
Vibration control for long-term storage
If you're laying bottles down for years rather than months, look for anti-vibration compressor mounts and beech shelving, which damps vibration better than wire. Thermoelectric models have no vibration at all, which is their strongest argument where the ambient temperature allows.
Humidity provision
Natural corks need 50–70 percent relative humidity. Better cabinets include a humidity tray or active control; cheaper ones rely on the wine itself and can run dry. If you're storing for the long term, this matters — and a hygrometer inside the cabinet is a cheap way to keep an eye on it.
Noise for open-plan living
A wine cooler often sits in a kitchen-diner or living space and runs continuously. Thermoelectric models produce only fan noise, typically around 35dB. Compressor models run 38–42dB. Anything above 45dB will be noticeable in a quiet room in the evening, so it's worth checking the figure before buying.
Do you install the wine cooler and take the old one away?

Can I build a freestanding wine cooler into a run of units?
No — freestanding models vent at the rear and will overheat and fail if boxed in. You need a model specifically rated for built-in or built-under installation, which vents through the plinth. It's a common and expensive mistake, and we check the specification before you order.
Should I get thermoelectric or compressor?
It depends on the room. If the cooler is going in a normal kitchen that gets warm, choose compressor — thermoelectric can only manage 10–15°C below ambient and will disappoint you every summer. If it's going in a cool cellar, utility or study and you value silence and zero vibration, thermoelectric is excellent.
How many bottles will actually fit?
Usually 20–30 percent fewer than the headline figure if you keep Champagne or Burgundy bottles, which are fatter than the standard Bordeaux shape the ratings assume. We'll ask what you typically store and size accordingly, because running out of space six months later is a common frustration.
How quickly can you deliver and install?
