Repairs across Baldock
Split between period-property appliance access problems in the High Street area and integrated appliance work on the Clothall Common estate.

The housing in Baldock — and what it does to appliances
The historic core along High Street, Whitehorse Street and Church Street holds Georgian coaching-era frontages and older timber-framed buildings, many listed. Victorian terracing sits behind, and the Clothall Common development of the 1980s and 1990s added a substantial body of modern estate housing. That gives the town two very distinct repair profiles within a mile of each other.
Hard water in Baldock
Very hard — Affinity Water chalk-derived supply on the North Hertfordshire chalk, typically around 300 ppm calcium carbonate (about 21 Clark degrees). In practice that means limescale builds on every heating element in the house — the washing machine, the dishwasher, the kettle and the boiler. It's the reason element and pump failures are so much more common here than in soft-water parts of the country.
Descaling a washing machine and a dishwasher every eight to twelve weeks is the single most cost-effective thing a household in Baldock can do for its appliances. Our hard water guide explains exactly how.
Getting to you, and getting to the machine
Baldock's High Street is exceptionally wide, a legacy of the coaching trade, so parking along the central section is easier than in most historic Hertfordshire towns, although loading close to the older frontages can still be restricted. The buildings themselves are the real challenge: listed properties with narrow doors, a step up from the pavement and tight dog-leg passages to the rear. Clothall Common is the opposite, all driveways, garages and level thresholds, but a maze of similar-looking closes where a postcode alone will not find you. The A505 bypass keeps through traffic off the centre, which makes timed arrivals more dependable.
