Repairs across Cambourne
Overwhelmingly integrated appliance work — built-under dishwashers and ovens from the original build phases now failing at much the same time across whole streets.
Reached directly off the A428 between the A1 and the M11, giving fast access from either direction and making Cambourne one of the simpler village runs to slot into a morning.
The housing in Cambourne — and what it does to appliances
This is one of the most uniformly modern housing stocks in the county — brick-and-render estate development from the late 1990s onwards, laid out around greens and a business park. Kitchens are compact and overwhelmingly fitted with integrated appliances: built-under ovens, slimline dishwashers and column fridge-freezers behind cabinet doors. The earliest Great Cambourne homes are now well past twenty years old, so original appliances are reaching the end of their lives together.
Hard water in Cambourne
Very hard — Cambridge Water's Z6 Coton zone supplies the village at 294 mg/l calcium carbonate, 20.6 Clark degrees, from chalk boreholes. In practice that means limescale builds on every heating element in the house — the washing machine, the dishwasher, the kettle and the boiler. It's the reason element and pump failures are so much more common here than in soft-water parts of the country.
Descaling a washing machine and a dishwasher every eight to twelve weeks is the single most cost-effective thing a household in Cambourne can do for its appliances. Our hard water guide explains exactly how.
Getting to you, and getting to the machine
Layout is what catches people out in Cambourne: the estates are built around greens and looping crescents, house numbering does not always run the way you expect, and many properties are served by rear parking courts reached through a gap between houses. Visitor bays fill up during the working day, and some of the newer West Cambourne streets have restricted or unfinished access while building continues. Against that, the houses themselves are easy to work in, with level thresholds, wide doorways and no steps anywhere, and the whole village is a simple run directly off the A428 from either the A1 or the M11 end.
