A built-in oven is a deceptively simple appliance that fails in a small number of very predictable ways. Around 70 percent of the oven calls we attend come down to three things: a failed fan element, a failed thermostat or NTC sensor, and a tripped thermal cut-out. All three are caused by the same underlying stress — repeated heating and cooling of metal components inside an insulated box, day after day, for a decade. The fan oven element is the workhorse and the usual casualty. It is a coiled resistance element wrapped around the rear fan, drawing typically 2.0–2.5kW, and it heats and cools through several hundred degrees on every use. Eventually the sheath cracks or the element burns through, sometimes with a visible bright flash and a tripped RCD. Grill elements and base elements fail the same way but less often, because they are used less. The second big category is temperature control. Older ovens use a capillary thermostat — a gas-filled phial in the cavity connected by a thin tube to a control knob — while modern electronic ovens use an NTC thermistor reporting to a PCB. When either drifts, you get an oven that overshoots, undershoots or never reaches temperature, and food that burns on the outside and stays raw in the middle. A drifted thermostat is easy to mistake for a duff element, which is why we always test rather than assume. The third is the door: hinges that sag, seals that harden and crack, and inner glass panels that shatter. A poor door seal costs energy on every use, cooks unevenly, and lets heat reach the control panel where it kills PCBs. Built-in ovens are the strongest repair case in the whole kitchen. A replacement single oven costs £350–£800 for the appliance alone, and swapping one out means matching the aperture, checking the cable rating at the cooker point, and sometimes modifying the housing — so the true replacement cost is often £500–£1,000. Applied against the 50% rule, that leaves a great deal of headroom for a £90 call-out plus a part. Typical lifespan is 10 to 15 years and premium models regularly exceed 20, because an oven has far fewer moving parts than a washing machine or dishwasher. Elements, thermostats, hinges, seals and lamps are consumable items designed to be replaced during the appliance's life, not evidence it has reached the end of it. The clear replace decisions are a failed control board on a budget oven over twelve years old where the part alone approaches half the replacement price, or a cavity with structural corrosion or split enamel. Environmentally, an oven's manufacturing footprint is substantial — a lot of steel, glass and insulation for one appliance — so extending its life by fitting a new element is far better than scrapping it. Run your hand around the seal — it should be soft and springy, with no hardened, cracked or missing sections, and it should sit in every retaining clip. A failed seal costs energy on every use, cooks unevenly, and lets heat into the housing where it kills control boards. A replacement seal is around £30 in parts.
Resting a loaded roasting tray on the open door is the single most common cause of stretched hinge springs and dropped doors. The door is designed to support its own weight, not a 4kg tray of beef. A pair of hinges costs far more than the convenience is worth.
Wipe spills once the oven has cooled to hand-warm rather than letting them carbonise over weeks. Never spray cold water or lay a damp cloth on hot glass — thermal shock is the leading cause of shattered oven door panels. Baked-on carbon also absorbs heat and skews cooking.
Strong oven cleaners degrade rubber door seals and attack the element sheath and the glass edge bonding. Mask the seal with tape or remove it if the product allows, and never spray directly onto the fan element. Use a bicarbonate paste for routine cleaning instead.
Put a £10 oven thermometer on the middle shelf, set 180°C, and check after 20 minutes of stabilising. A drift of more than about 15°C means the thermostat or NTC is going and is worth correcting before it ruins your baking and wastes energy on every use.
Foil laid on the oven floor reflects heat back at the base element, can trip the thermal cut-out, and on some models causes the cavity enamel to blister. Use a baking tray on the lowest shelf to catch drips instead. This is one of the most common causes of avoidable element and TCO failures.
Don't isolate the oven at the wall switch the moment you finish cooking. The tangential cooling fan needs to run on for 20 to 45 minutes to pull heat out of the cabinet and away from the control board. Cutting it short is a slow way to kill an expensive PCB.
Fan ovens cook around 20°C hotter than conventional at the same dial setting, so drop recipe temperatures by 20°C when using fan. Running everything 20°C too hot for years accelerates element and seal wear as well as burning your food. Check whether your model already compensates.

We withdraw the oven on its runners or fixing screws, work on it and refit it, checking the ventilation gaps around the housing are correct on refit since restricted airflow is a common cause of repeat board failures.

Electric ovens are the bulk of our work and we service them across all brands. Any work on gas appliances is carried out only by a Gas Safe registered engineer — we will never touch a gas connection or burner assembly outside that. If your appliance is gas, tell us when you book so we send the right engineer.
